Zuhair Murad Revives Hollywood's Golden Age with Designs That Combine Strength and Femininity
Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad revisited Hollywood's Golden Age in his new collection, drawing inspiration from legendary screen stars like Katharine Hepburn and the powerful characters they embodied
The reference to that era was evident in the bold-shouldered silhouettes, which spoke volumes: sculpted and sharp, with strong lines anchoring delicate sheer gowns and flowing capes.
The recent return of bold shoulders is often credited with reviving 1980s fashion. But that same decade was heavily inspired by the 1940s, prompting Murad to revisit films from that era when designing this collection.
Strength and Substance: A Message of Modern Femininity
Murad explained that Hepburn's characters were always characterized by strength and substance, which is why he believes the era still resonates with modern women. "Women today are still fighting for their dreams, their presence, and their identity," he emphasized, emphasizing the importance of remembering the strength in femininity. This deliberate interaction resulted in a palpable tension between softness and hardness in the design.
While his recent ready-to-wear and resort collections were more subdued, Murad brought back the sparkle and shine with this collection, bringing with it “glitter and joy.”
The “Golden Age” and the Red Carpet Gone
Murad took the “golden” in “golden age” literally, using a palette of yellow tones and plenty of glitter. One sequin-encrusted column gown looked like a freshly polished Oscar. Murad is a red carpet favorite for good reason: his gowns are undeniably eye-catching.
The Lebanese designer said the current tensions in the Middle East created logistical challenges, particularly in receiving fabric shipments from Italy and France. But the couturier continued his work. The result, he said, was a collection that reflected hope and resilience—qualities that reinforced the collection’s core message.
For the first time, Murad introduced luxurious faux fur in stoles, wraps, and oversized coats with cocoon-like cuts. Some are decorated with beads and cabochons, adding another layer of luxury without sacrificing the ethical aspect.
