As binaries erode, fashion has entered into a sort of “unboxing” period.
Ideas about gender, size, and appropriateness are all being redefined. Or
are they? The bridal market exists as a dreamy bubble in the fashion
hierarchy, but it is one that designers are increasingly keen to burst
into.
Wedding options have always existed in ready-to-wear—even if they weren’t
designed for that purpose, and we’ve collected some from the fall 2022
runways here. The appeal of the slip dress, which Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy
made a wedding staple, shows no sign of slowing down. The popularity of
poufs is in no danger of deflating either; Bella Hadid wore a lovely one at
Off-White. What feels new is romantic suiting options (from the likes of
Yohji Yamamoto, Cecilie Bahnsen, House of Aama, and Richard Quinn), and
dresses that are more columnar (be they draped, empire, or two-piece) than
fit-and-flare.
Taste is individual, and some of these picks might elicit eye rolls; maybe
only fans of cosplay will gravitate toward the teddy bear textures seen at
Dolce & Gabbana and in Y/Project’s menswear collection. That particular
dress was designed for a female model, but at Louis Vuitton, the bridal
looks were tailored for men. Leave it to the late Virgil Abloh to take us in
imaginative new directions.
