35 Vogue Editors Share the Best White T-shirts
Throughout the history of pop culture, from Marlon Brando to Kendall Jenner, the white T-shirt has been ingrained in both our lives and our wardrobes. “Everybody needs it. Every culture and subculture has used the white T-shirt. That’s where the genius is,” says Karla Welch, a stylist who committed herself to developing the perfect white tee. For us at Vogue, the shirt has become a unifying closet staple. As we return to the office, travel, and make social plans, there’s something comforting about wearing a crisp, classic white T-shirt in the morning—fresh and dewy-faced. Perhaps we’ll add a touch of jewelry, whether that’s a pair of gold hoops or a minimalist chain necklace. But the best white tees can be paired with just about everything, from comfortable at-home yoga pants to dressy skirts for the office and beyond. And what’s more iconic and representative of our daily lives than a white T-shirt and a classic pair of blue jeans? Two editors weighed in on this divisive topic, and the verdict is in: Yes, jeans can be comfortable at home too.
Below, 35 Vogue editors share the best white T-shirts for women and men to wear now and forever.

Taking notes from the FW22 runways, a plain white tee paired with an elevated bottom has increasingly become my go-to uniform. Whether with tailored trousers, a flowy skirt, or classic straight-leg jeans, a cotton tee never fails to add that crisp finishing touch to a classic look.

This white tee from Loewe may be a bit of a splurge but it is worth every cent! Made from a soft cotton-jersey with the house’s ‘Anagram’ logo embroidered discreetly on the chest. In my opinion, this is the perfect white tee to throw on with a pair of jeans and sneakers to feel laid back yet chic.

The Skims Cotton Jersey T-Shirt has quickly become the hero item of my closet. It is the perfect everyday tee, and the stretch-cotton material makes it a comfortable, lightweight shirt.

When it comes to feel-good essentials, look no further than Kotn. An ethically sustainability-focused brand at its core, Kotn products are made with biodegradable fibers that are buttery soft. I fell in love with their classic white tee, which perfectly shapes my torso and is, best of all, 100% Egyptian cotton.

Time and time again, K.nglsey continues to prove that basics don’t have to be boring. I could live in the label’s expertly crafted tees and tanks.

There’s nothing better than the feel of a super worn-in t-shirt, and Mother’s Rowdy tee masters that vintage feel, without ever having been worn before. Plus, it has just the right amount of slouch you want from an oversized silhouette.

The Petit Bateau Iconic T-shirt is just that. It is simple and elegant, and looks just as good with a long evening skirt as it does a loose pair of worn-in denim. Bonus points: The brand makes them for kids too.

I have searched high and low for a white T-shirt that is both flattering and practical. Enter this Everlane tee—thick enough to wear on its own, a little boxy for easy movement, and cropped just right so it hits the top of whatever high-waist item I pulled on that day. I love the pocket detail for added interest, but it’s also available without a pocket if that’s more your style.

Why just have one perfect tee when you can have five? I get a pack of boys Fruit of the Loom in size XL, and at this price point, I don’t even blink if I spill coffee on one. They get softer with wear and are great on their own, layered under sweaters, for workouts, or for sleep…exactly why you need five!

There are two things I consistently look for in a white tee (or any tee for that matter): 100% cotton and an oversized fit. I have a long torso and require length. I also love a boxy cut and a drop-shoulder seam. This tee from Totême fits the bill nicely.

Soft, plush, and with a vintage-like feel, the perfect white T-shirt did not exist...until now. Don’t walk, run to get this Éterne tee.

I have broad shoulders and love how they look in a muscle tank. This one is absolutely perfect. The sleeves hit right at the edge of my shoulders in a way that’s surprisingly delicate, and the cotton is fine and soft. Paired with wide-leg trousers, it gives me the Phoebe Philo–esque look I’ve been trying to achieve my whole life!

I love the filmy texture—without being totally transparent—of Bassike’s tees. Their long-sleeve with a slight mock-neck is my absolute favorite, but if you must go short, their tee gets the job done with style.

Not only is this my favorite white T-shirt, but it’s also possibly my favorite T-shirt altogether (there are so many colors)! Fit and price are key, which is why I love this crewneck from Uniqlo.

I’d love to have this Raey T-shirt in all colors hanging in my closet, but if I had to choose one, it would be a classic white. The proportions are hard to get right on a short-sleeve tee, but this one is perfect.

Besides the neckline, my favorite thing about this crewneck tee is the 50% cotton, 50% modal material. Never have I ever worn a shirt so soft and comfortable, which makes it perfect for working from home.

I’ve started arranging basics by softness because I reach for silky clouds first, and my Mackay tee lives on the good shelf. It feels like a bouncy ribbed knit designed for the film wardrobe of a “successful minimalist” character.

If there is one item I absolutely can’t go without, it is a Uniqlo Supima cotton tee. I’m all for “buy nice, not twice,” but at this price point, I can’t help but double up each season.

I’ve been wearing Cos’s oversized white tees lately. I love the slouchy fit and that the cotton is slightly thicker than your standard tee. I can wear one with black trousers and it still looks dressy.

I have, maybe, two or three white T-shirts on hand, and that’s because I prefer to keep only my favorites on rotation. I’ve been really loving this crewneck tee from AG because of its soft, lightweight feel. Though it has an oversized silhouette, I can still tuck it into jeans or shorts for a polished look.

I’ve never been a wear-my-boyfriend’s-shirt kind of girl. So I appreciate a white tee that looks nothing like a man’s undershirt. The sleeves on this A.L.C. cotton top do just the trick.

My favorite white tee is the Hanes x Karla crew because I like my tees to have weight, especially if they are white. I love it so much that I have it in both the cropped and tank versions! White tees can veer unflattering, but this one retains a good structure.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Judi Rosen makes the most incredible basics: smartly cut, supremely soft, and—most important—consciously crafted and built to last. Call it the ’90s supermodel effect, but lately, I’ve been excited to stock up on perfectly shrunken white baby tees for spring and summer. Cool, sexy, and versatile!

A white T-shirt seems to be the toughest item to shop for, but like it is for most things, Aritzia has the perfect one. This tee is tight enough, thick enough, and buttery enough that it looks tailored for the office and is the perfect lounge item.

My wardrobe weak spot is a shirt that is comfy enough to lie on the couch in, but also acceptable to wear during work Zoom meetings. Did I ever realize I’d have this extremely niche need? Nope, but here we are!
Enter A.P.C.’s Marina short-sleeve shirt. It’s made of 100% cotton, which makes it perfect for lazy lounging. The added collar makes me look like I have my act together. Which I don’t, by the way.

Christian Cowan is better known for his red carpet creations and viral runway moments than wardrobe essentials. His unisex, white t-shirt challenges that assumption. Perfect in thickness and cut, the shirt is ideal for any occasion. The subtle crystal “C” detail injects just enough glamour into this basic.

I love Kule’s cotton tees for their classic unisex shape and soft, lightweight feel, with sleeves that are just long enough and never too tight. They tuck perfectly into my favorite jeans (a French tuck preferably, so as not to hide the brand’s trademark stripe at the bottom hem—my favorite part!).

I wrote about this no-fuss Hanes white tee in my WFH outfits post, and I’ll take another opportunity to sing its praises. I love the fit because it layers really well under sweaters and tucks easily into pants and skirts. And if you’re the kind of person who, like me, can’t keep your whites white forever, the price point here is quite forgiving when you need to restock.
