The idea that heels "lift you off the ground" was associated with status long before it became a fashion trend in the modern sense.

The Era of Egyptian Cinema: High Heels as Part of the Star's Image

In the 1940s and 50s, with the flourishing of Egyptian cinema, high heels became an essential part of the star's on-screen image.
